I‘ve actually met Anthony Weiner a number of times, and he was likable and funny. He was always a tad intense, but I think he also had a sense of self-deprecation that would come out here and there that helped give him a kind of roguish likability. I also think it’s pretty clear he has an addiction and as a result his marriage is toast. Which is not to say I don’t think he has that coming, he has been a complete dick and apparently still is one.
Weiner is the kind of a guy who, like pretty much all politicians, considers every vote he gets to be a kiss on the cheek from his mother, and that can very quickly become an addiction. Everyone likes being liked, and for politicians having actual people vote for you means you are really, really liked. When these guys feel the high of elected office only to see it taken away it must be tempting to look for thrills elsewhere, and clearly Weiner turned to online liaisons with random women to satiate his need to be really, really liked. Pretty pathetic, but not unheard of in this day and age.
I’ve also met his wife Huma Abedin a number of times, and she was always completely charming and there’s no question she’s brilliant and competent and utterly patriotic as well as being strikingly beautiful, which is nice. Obviously she had hoped to save her marriage, but she’s just announced that she’s separated from Weiner so no luck with that.
I don’t know, it’s all a bit sad I think. The media has had a field day with all aspects of their personal and professional lives, and that has to suck. But that’s the price you pay for wanting to be big time but still thinking you can be a huge weiner too.
